Each of us has favourite fragrances that our olfactory centre recognises.  At an instant, our nose can detect, and associate, an elixir long forgotten. Thanks to a perfume, the surging memory of a special moment in our lives can be instantly restored.  In a second our spirits can be lifted and soar with joy, or drown with sadness and longing.

Exclusive or Just Good Marketing

Eager to cash in on our love of perfumes, the latest fragrances being launched for 2007 are for the so called niche markets.  Several are the libraries of 'exclusive' perfumes.

I have to write that as I looked at the price range of these exclusive niche perfumes, I found that at a starting price of £80 I don't think the prices are that prohibitive.  Two of the best offers were from the Tom Ford Private Blend collection at £80+ and the Chanel Exclusif at £120.  If I can afford one of these perfumes as a treat then I suspect you can too.

So what does this say to me?  The answer is – clever marketing, very clever marketing!  Maybe if the most you normally pay for a new scent is around £40, then twice that amount will sound expensive and even rarefied.  These niche perfumes are supposed to be exclusive, yet I feel they would have to cost a lot more than £100 to be truly exclusive.  Exclusive would be a perfume designed for you by an expert like Roja Dove at Harrods, but of course at much, much greater cost.  At Roja Dove you would be involved in the consultation and savour some samplings – that is what having an exclusive perfume really means.

This idea of niche exclusive perfumes is the same marketing technique that has been successfully employed for 'must-have' and 'want it' bag ranges.   Do marketers think none of us ever read the fairy story of the Emperor's New Clothes?   If you remember, it took the fool to tell the Emperor that what his designers told him were fancy clothes, were in fact, nothing but their imaginations.

Now it's clear to me this all looks like a clever marketing way to hike the price of top brand name perfumes.  It is so simple, but this is just marketing genius – exclusive – but not so exclusive that the item is unattainable.   Hard to obtain maybe, but priced so that even if you had to save for it, the perfume is attainable, rather than priced out of your dreams.  This is simply attainable luxury.  Pricier than normal, but nevertheless doable. Available in selected outlets or boutiques, rather than so exclusive you couldn't get a bottle from a major city boutique, or from a top store like Harrods or Bergdorf Goodman.  Such perfumes are desirable and are lovely, but always remember that branding and vanity branding is big business.

Now cross the room and squint to your vision of the bottle of No. 5 blurs. Water is first.

It did not work? Try this: picture in your mind a picture of Andy Warhol # 5 a bottle. Now imagine that painted by Renoir. That is also the First Water.

Perhaps visual comparisons are not for you. Then I will quote the "Fashion Rocks" supplement to Vogue this September is:

    A fragrance Chanel No. 5 is a bit like the Beach Boys Pet Sounds, an album that did not initially go into gold, but is considered one of the greatest albums ever made, and sold a ton over the long term. Similarly, the reformulation Chanel No. 5 Eau Première, launched this fall for a younger market, is akin to a dance club remix of something written permission of American Idol.

By now you've probably got the idea. First water is the essence of 5 – its neroli, rose, jasmine, ylang-ylang, amber, vetiver, sandalwood and – and it softens the edges removing aldehyde and bits of straw that smell of Italian wine to leave an easy-to-sing-along-with version of the original. When you smell Eau Première, you know you smell the direct relationship of 5. But instead of the elegant aunt who is 5, you get his niece, Queen Homecoming aspiring to a career in public relations.

It's hard for me to form an opinion of the First Water, without comparing it to No. 5. First water is a little rosier than 5, with more vanillic DRYING. It lacks all the charm of fustiness 5, and it does not change dramatically over time. I can not find the First Water "fresh" or "modern" than the Chanel PR engine, it is said – after all, is a floral fragrance friendly, and we've seen those before. But sometimes a person wants basic yellow cake – a good, made with real butter and fresh eggs – and not some concoction extravagant Viennese bakery.

Do I like well enough water first to pay for a bottle? No, but I certainly understand if you do. It feels to me like a solid, well-balanced, fragrance carefully done, and I would be happy to feel anyone around me. Plus, the water is like a hearty First Eau de Toilette, which lasts almost as long as the No. 5 Eau de Parfum I wore at his side.

Returning to the Beach Boys Pet Sounds analogy again. If "God Only Knows (What I would do without you)" is your answer to No. 5, then by all means try the water first, but do not expect to dethrone the original. If on the other hand, you had trouble with the aldehydes 5 and it is too dated, but something in his classic construction of jasmine roses on a soft, calls the basic warm for you, then water could be perfect first.

In 1981, the jeweler Cartier launched a new and interesting range dealing with a total look for the approach to personal styling with jewelry pieces to match. They launched a perfume and entered the men’s personal styling and grooming industry, by creating the Santos de Cartier fragrance for men. Over time the company has built a solid and reputable following in designing and launching elegant and expensive perfumes for the very rich and luxury market.

Success after success has followed with Santos de Cartier in 1981, the first perfume created by Maison de Cartier. It is a very vibrant fragrance designed for used in wintry conditions or in the chill of the evening, giving off a deep sense of freshness and a feeling of green. The fragrance is more for the mature and sensual type of man, who knows how to look well groomed. The scent is a heady and strong mixture of floral and wood spice. The upper layer of the fragrance has oils like lavender, juniper berry, basil, lemon verbena, and bergamot. The middle of the perfume has spiciness to it as it contains rosemary, nutmeg, vetiver, geranium and pepper, followed by a basic scent created from sandalwood, amber, patchouli, coconut, cedar and vanilla. Although he used some really humble ingredients, the perfume is unmistakably masculine in it inception and sense.

This was followed by Must de Cartier for women in 1981, launched by Jean-Jacques Diener. There are several layers to this elegant and charming fragrance as it start off by light hearted and full of citrus smells. The perfume is totally ideal for wearing in cool weather conditions and is a true classic of it own standing. As the day progresses the scent becomes naughtier with a sense of being flowery and fruity, and the nest you it has become heavy and musky.

The Must de Cartier is packaged in an expensive way and looks very sensual and has a dark elixir look to in the bottle. If used correctly, it could make for a night of passion, romance and seduction, all leading to a crazy feeling of being wanton and abandonment. It is not a fragrance for the faint hearted, more for the elegant, experienced woman. It would be wasted on a young girl. It does have some sophisticated ingredients such as aldhydes, pineapple, green mandarin, galbanum, peach, bergamot, brazilian rosewood and lemon in its upper layers. As the body temperature gets hotter, the middle layer develops, and that has a blend of carnation, leather, yellow, narcissus, musk, orchid, orris root, jasmine, vetiver, neroli, yling-ylang and rose. As the evening wears off it has a sense of the following amber, sandalwood, tonka bean, vanilla, vetiver and civet.

Eau de Cartier was officially launched in 2001 under the aegis of Christine Nagel of Quest Cartier and is bisexual perfume with a strong citrus aroma. It owes its early conception to the big success of Déclaration Perfume, a daytime eau de toilette for men which first came on the market in 1998. But the nature of the fragrance is such, that it is popular with women as well. But there is down side to using this fragrance and that is that it only lasted 20 minutes. But there are other alternatives to it like Eau de Cartier Concentree. This awesome perfume contains some very strong layers of coriander, yuzu, and bergamot. It has the middle of violet leaf, lavender and violet with the base heady notes of cedar,patchouli, musk and white amber. Such a lively perfume is a must for the all corporate woman executive who lives in a man’s world. It reeks of appointments, schedules, interviews and sales presentations to big companies.

The Cartier Panthere Perfume has built up a good reputation over time since it was launched in 1987 and is a bold, smooth and divine. It’s more in keeping with the casual image and is suitable for older women and someone in their teens. It does contain a sweet blend of labdanum, ginger, orange blossom, mandarin orange, pepper, grapefruit and rose. It has a dominant middle layer of nutmeg, carnation, tuberose, iris, gardenia, freesia, jasmine, karo-korund, vetiver, heliotrope, ylang-ylang and narcissus. This followed by the basic volume of sandalwood, tonka beans, amber, patchouli, musk, civet, vanilla, oakmoss, incense and cedar.

In 2006 Christine Nagel launched Delices de Cartier which has the classic allure of a rich, bold, feminine coupled with underhandedness of being sugary sweet. When you first apply the perfume you are struck by how sparkly the fragrance is and it has a strong pepper aroma to it. Eventually as your skin gets used to it one gets a sense of fruitiness followed by a sharp clear smell contrasting vibrantly with a floral accord. Hardly surprising when the middle of the scent contains a lot of violet, freesia, and jasmine, followed by sandalwood, tonka beans and amber. It has long lasting power to keep the mature, sensual woman going through the day.
